IPO Summary: Biotech Deals Fall Flat in Subdued IPO Market

TRex Bio (TRXB): TRex Bio Closes Flat as Oversubscribed Book Fails to Deliver IPO Pop

TRex Bio (TRXB US) may have found a place in the IPO market, but investors were not willing to pay a premium on day one. The clinical-stage biotech priced its offering at the low end of the range, opened below issue and spent the session trading in a tight band before closing flat at $14.00. The debut reinforces a developing theme: the biotech IPO window remains open, but meaningful first-day premiums are far from guaranteed.

TRex Bio (TRXB) priced 8.34 million shares at $14.00, the low end of its $14–$16 marketed range, raising approximately $116.8 million in gross proceeds. The stock opened at $13.50, a 3.6% discount to the IPO price, before stabilizing and finishing its first session at $14.00, unchanged from issue.

Trading activity was relatively subdued, with just 1.26 million shares changing hands during the opening session, equivalent to approximately 15% of the shares offered.

The book finished multiple times oversubscribed, supported by stable conversions among healthcare-dedicated investors. However, the allocation was highly concentrated, with the top 10 accounts receiving approximately 80% of the offering.

Retension Pharmaceuticals (RTSN): Micro-Cap Biotech Debut Falls Flat

Retension Pharmaceuticals (RTSN) delivered a disappointing first day on the public markets, with the micro-cap biotech opening sharply below its IPO price before staging a modest recovery. The company priced 3.75 million shares, upsized from the initially marketed 3.3 million, at $12.00 per share, the midpoint of its offering range.

The stock opened at $10.00, a 16.7% discount to the IPO price, before sliding to an intraday low of $9.66. Shares recovered during the session to close at $10.53, still down 12.3% from issue. Trading volume remained below 800,000 shares, reflecting limited aftermarket activity and little fanfare surrounding the debut.

The upsizing suggested sufficient demand to expand the offering, but the weak opening and inability to approach the $12.00 issue price highlighted the challenges facing smaller, early-stage biotechnology companies in the current IPO environment.

The biotech IPO calendar remains active, with Iambic Therapeutics (IAM) scheduled to debut Thursday, October 15, followed by City Therapeutics (CTY) on Friday, October 16. Iambic is developing AI-designed small-molecule medicines for cancer and other serious diseases, while City Therapeutics is advancing RNA interference (RNAi)-based therapies designed to selectively silence disease-causing genes. Both offerings will provide another read on investor appetite for emerging biotech companies and whether the sector can sustain IPO momentum amid a more selective issuance environment.
